Kootenay Artists Series

DOUG and SHELLEY THRING were born and raised in New Denver. Growing up, singsongs were a given part of any family gathering. Their mother, Marguerite Thring, encouraged singing and music lessons. Shelley and Marguerite sang together in the Valhalla Community Choir for over twenty years. Marguerite’s mother (Douh & Shelley’s maternal grandmother) was the organist and choir director in the United Church in New Denver and their paternal grandmother was known for operatic pursuits. Doug, now retired from his career as Municipal Recreation Director, makes his home on Saltspring Island and is pursuing music in a big way, playing guitar and singing with two bands on a regular basis. Shelley sang with the Dirty Laundry and Deep Fried String Bands and is taking advantage of the musical opportunities Nakusp has to offer. Singing together feels natural for this brother and sister act and they are enjoying the more recent experience of doing it in a more professional way. They will be singing covers of blues and rock numbers by B.B. King, Bonnie Raitt, Colin James, Etta James, Susie Vinnick, Steve Winwood, Eva Cassidy, Amy Winehouse etc.

with Special Guest LEROY

Kootenay Artists Series

NIKKI COLE is a vibrant local artist who specializes in movement classes, from dancing (Zumba, Bellyfit, Groove, Stretch, Strength, and world dance) to her most creative component yet – Puppets on the Move. She has been studying and applying herself to movement, essential to our living. For half a decade she has been exploring and leading holistic fitness and wellness workshops. She believes creativity is very much linked to spirituality and would like to see Puppets on the Move positively impacting the whole entire world with the fusion of moving with Nikki, puppets, and creative genius.

DANNY WIEBE is well-known in Nakusp as the owner of Box Lake Lumber. His friend LEROY is 15 years old and was bought for Danny by his wife Sandy as his second doll. His first doll Archie was smaller than Leroy and retired after 10 years with Danny. In the past, Danny participated in ventriloquism competitions but now he is mostly keeping busy with his business. He does take out Leroy to Company Christmas parties and occasionally entertains the crowd at Alliance Church as well.

This episodic play written by Eve Ensler ran at the OffBroadway Westside Theatre after a limited run at HERE Arts Center in 1996. Charles Isherwood of The New York Times called the play "probably the most important piece of political theater of the last decade." The monologues spotlight varying themes in womanhood and have been translated into over 48 languages and performed in over 140 countries. In 2011, Ensler was awarded the Isabelle Stevenson Award at the 65th Tony Awards, which recognizes an individual from the theater community who has made a substantial contribution of volunteered time and effort on behalf of humanitarian, social service, or charitable organizations. Ensler originally starred in the production which was produced by David Stone, Nina Essman, Dan Markley, The Araca Group, Willa Shalit and the West Side Theater. When she left the play, it was recast with three celebrity monologists. The play has been staged internationally, and a television version featuring Ensler was produced by cable TV channel HBO. In 1998, Ensler and others, including Willa Shalit, a producer of the Westside Theatre production, launched V-Day, a global non-profit movement that has raised over US$100 million for groups working to end violence against women and girls anti-violence through benefits of The Vagina Monologues.

Andreea Myhal took residence in this gem of a city not too long ago, along with her teacher husband Michael, and promptly got involved in the best Nakusp has to offer. She is the Director of the Nakusp & District Museum, the Treasurer of the Arts Council, and mom to a number of creatures in her household. She manages community projects, volunteers for the Rail Society in Nakusp and the Nelson Electric Tram Society as a driver, sings soprano and plays the piano for the Arrow Lakes Choir, freelances for the Valley Voice and the Arrow Lakes News, and hosts Drea’s Variety Show on the local community radio station, The Arrow 107.1 FM. She speaks several languages and loves organizing things and people, so look for her anywhere such skills are required. This is a live version of her radio variety show, combining live music compiled, readings, and helpful information for life, along a theme of her choosing, to be recorded and later broadcast on the local station.
